After 60 years mural arrives at Post Office
The old Cadiz Post Office (now the
Janice Mason Art Museum) will finally get its mural. At the September 14
reception for the opening of the Kentucky Guild of Artists and Craftsmen
exhibit, the completed work will be unveiled. Mrs. Charlotte Wilson was
selected to paint the mural in the tradition of Works Progress Administration
post office murals across the country.
The Museum made the announcement in
May and Mrs. Wilson has been painting on the 13-foot canvas ever since.
The lobby of the old Post Office was designed with a space for a mural, but for
reasons unknown, one was never commissioned. A traveling exhibit of photographs
of other Post Office WPA murals started Board member Paul Fourshee wondering
why. When it was announced that the Museum would seek an artist to create
the colossal work, the Trigg County Historic and Preservation Society graciously
agreed to sponsor the project.
The excitement continues to build as
the unveiling draws near. Make plans to join the Board of Directors, Mrs.
Wilson, the Trigg County Historic and Preservation Society and many of our
Museum friends as we celebrate this great event in the life of the Museum on
Saturday, September 14, beginning at 6:00 PM.
