Native Poet-Educator to Conduct Writing Workshop and Reading at the Janice Mason Art Museum in Cadiz

Nancy Genevieve Perkins, formerly of Cadiz, the daughter of Jim and Aileen Steinhauer of Paducah, will be conducting a creative writing workshop on Memoir Writing at the Janice Mason Art Museum in Cadiz on Friday, October 18 from 2:30 to 4:30 p.m.

Enrollment for the Workshop is limited, so interested individuals should call the Museum at 270-522-9056 to enroll; the fee is $10.00.  Also on that same Friday evening she will conduct a poetry reading and book signing from her new poetry book, NYX: Daughter of Chaos, at the Museum at 7:00 p.m.  The reading is open to the public and the books are available at the gift shop.

Perkins is better known locally as an English educator; she taught English at Trigg County High School from 1977-1990, and she started and directed the Writing Center at Murray State University from 1975-1977.

Her Trigg County students published six volumes of local history, which were known as Echoes.  She currently teaches creative writing at the University of Illinois at Springfield.

Her new volume of poetry is the second book of the NYX trilogy.  NYX was the name of an ancient Greek mythological character; she was the personification of night.  Nancy read from the first volume, NYX: Mother of Light, last fall at the Museum.  “Reading from my new poetry book in Cadiz in the fall is becoming a tradition.  A tradition I love”, noted Perkins.

All of Perkin’s creative work is published under her first two names; Nancy Genevieve.  These are the names her parents gave to her at birth, naming her after two of her great aunts.  Laughing, Nancy recalled, “This use of one last name in the classroom and another last name on the publications has caused some difficulties and confusion since she is known as Nancy Perkins.

The Janice Mason Art Museum provides a variety of artistic experiences to the public.  Stop by and browse through the current gallery showing and the gift shop.  Museum hours are 10:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. on Monday, Tuesday, Thursday, Friday, and Saturday; Sunday 1:00 to 4:00, and closed on Wednesdays.  Partial funding has been provided by The Kentucky Arts Council a state agency in the Education, Arts and Humanities Cabinet with support from the National Endowment for the Arts.
