Cadiz Community Arts Center Adds Performing Arts Organization

Southern Kentucky Independent Theatre (SKIT) has joined Cadiz Community Arts Center (CCAC) as the performance arts component of the arts center.  CCAC was formed in 1998, and the announcement of this new addition is part of its 10 Year Anniversary celebration.

Shortly after CCAC was incorporated, financial pledges from community members and a donation from David and Janice Mason made it possible to purchase the historic Cadiz Post Office building and establish the Janice Mason Art Museum.  Until now CCAC has primarily concentrated its efforts on developing the visual arts.

From the beginning, CCAC held a long-range goal to eventually add a performance arts component.  During the past two years, that goal neared completion as Janice Mason Arts Museum partnered with Trigg County schools, local businesses, and parents to present three community theatre productions, Seussical, The Wiz, and Dining With the Dearly Departed.  These productions were made possible in part through a two-year grant from the Kentucky Arts Council.  Based on the success of these productions and the expressed interest from the community, Southern Kentucky Independent Theatre has joined Cadiz Community Arts Center as the performing arts organization.

Southern Kentucky Independent Theatre or SKIT was incorporated in 1981 as a regional theatre serving Christian, Trigg, Todd, Caldwell and other surrounding areas. SKIT’s first performance was in August of 1981 for the annual Thomas – Bridges Association meeting.  It has an established reputation for varied, quality productions and a long-standing place in the theatre community of the area.

SKIT will operate as another branch of CCAC and will maintain its own operations and finances under the direction of a performing arts committee.  The performing arts committee, appointed by CCAC president Jean Martin, includes Martha Davis, Portia Ezell, Ann Taylor, Paul Fourshee, Pam Goolsby, Wayne Goolsby, Pat Puckett, David Ancil and Yancy Cook.  Paul Fourshee, board member of both SKIT and CCAC said, “This is a win-win opportunity for both organizations, enabling the arts center to move forward more rapidly in offering an active, vibrant performing arts group that already has a long, successful history.”

SKIT committee members have been meeting to select a summer musical to be performed in July at the Trigg County High School Little Theatre. An announcement will be made next month announcing the musical, audition dates and exact dates for the performances.

For further information contact Paul Fourshee on the performing arts link at jmam.org or at 522-6035. The Kentucky Arts Council, a state agency in the Commerce Cabinet, provides operational support funding for CCAC with state tax dollars and federal funding from the National Endowment for the Arts, which believes that a great nation deserves great art.

CADIZ, KY—The Janice Mason Art Museum presented awards for its Biannual Juried Show this week.  “Our second juried show is very successful,” said Board President Jean Martin.  “It’s great for us to be able to offer area artists the opportunity to compete and get their work exhibited.”  “We hope this show will continue to grow and become one of the most prestigious juried shows in the region,” said Museum administrator Paula Lisowsky.  “A show of this quality with generous prize money will draw the best in the area. Of course, without sponsorship by Bank of Cadiz and Trust Company, this wouldn’t have been possible.”

Cadiz, KY—Janice Mason Art Museum will exhibit “Memories of Dixon Farm”, beginning with an opening reception at 6:00 PM on Friday, October 27 and running through November 26.  C. Todd Birdsong’s series of photographic images is a captivating example of the use of computer technology to allow the artist to merge and manipulate a series of photographs into an original work of art.  Todd took the original photographs for this series in November 2003 while visiting friends on a farm near Cadiz.  He didn’t go to the farm seeking creative inspiration, but was inspired by the setting and took 50-60 digital photographs that “just evolved into a body of work.”

Originally from Paducah, Birdsong moved to Marshall County with his family in 1979 and graduated from Marshall County High School in 1985.  He graduated from Murray State University in 1991 with a major in Advertising and Journalism and a minor in Art with an emphasis in Fine Art Photography.  Todd worked as a technical assistant in the theatre department while a student at MSU.  After graduation he worked as technical director of the Market House Theatre, and is currently Technical Director of the Clemens Fine Arts Center at West Kentucky Community and Technical College.

The Janice Mason Art Museum is open Tuesdays – Saturdays 10:00 AM to 4:00 PM and Sundays 1:00 PM – 4:00 PM.  Evening hours can be arranged for group tours.  Admission is free; donations are greatly appreciated.
