MUSEUM ANNOUNCES MURAL CONTEST

The Janice Mason Art Museum announces that it will hold a contest to select an artist to design and paint a mural in the lobby of the Museum.  The contest will be open to anyone and will not be restricted to artists from Trigg County.  The chosen artist will receive a $500.00 award.

The Museum is located in the old Cadiz Post Office, which was built in 1940 with WPA funds.  “A space was designed for a mural, which was never painted.  It was not unusual for public buildings to have murals in this era because WPA money also was used to employ artists,” states contest chairman, Paul Fourshee.  “I have no idea why the mural was never commissioned,” says Fourshee.

The opening of the contest will coincide with the opening of the WPA Mural Exhibit at the Museum, October 19, 2001.

Anyone wishing to enter the contest may pick up an entry packet at the Museum office beginning October 19.  The packet will contain specific rules that must be followed.  An artist may submit up to 3 entries.  An impartial judge from a nearby university will select the winner.  It is expected that the mural will be unveiled March 5, 2002.

“We see this as another opportunity for the museum to provide something in which the community can be proud,” says museum president, Karen Clement.  Those interested my come by the Museum at 71 Main Street, or call 270-522-9056 or visit the web site at www.jmam.org.
