Japanese Kimono Exhibit
The Janice Mason Art Museum of Cadiz,
Kentucky announces the opening of Japanese Kimono from the Holeman Collection,
on loan from the Dawson Springs Museum and Art Center. This exhibit runs
March 29 - May 15, 2002 and contains almost 50 pieces of traditional Japanese
clothing, art and cultural artifacts collected by Curator Claude A. Holeman. A members-only reception for Mr. Holeman will be held April 13,
beginning at 6:30 PM.
Mr. Holeman lived and worked in Japan for
over 30 years. During that time, he came to appreciate the beauty of
Japanese kimono and other traditional garments and the exquisite fabrics used to
make them. He has just returned from a trip to Japan where he attended a
reunion of former students.
The centerpiece of the exhibit is the wedding
ensemble. As in Western culture, the white kimono signifies purity.
The red unchkake is an elaborately-detailed over robe worn in the
most formal or wedding ceremonies, both historically and in modern-day Japan.
Beautiful, vibrantly colored kimono, along
with their accompanying obi, or sashes, for young women are complemented by the
more subtle kimono for older ladies. There are several men's garments as
well, usually more subdued in decoration, including a Shinto priest's robe.
The exhibit includes a "summer
room" displaying yukata, the cotton kimono for summer and several
examples of traditional children's kimono.
Hair accessories, sandals, undergarments, and
haori (jackets worn over kimono) round out this showcase of Japanese
culture. Decorative porcelain and art prints from The Holeman Collection
can also be found throughout the Museum.
During this exhibit, patrons will have the
opportunity to own a vintage Japanese kimono jacket! The Museum has
obtained a mint-condition, 100 percent silk michiyuki. This
striking red garment is suitable for wearing or hanging and is on display in the
Museum Gift Shop. A silent auction will run throughout the exhibit with a
minimum bid of only $20.00. Proceeds will help bring more quality art
events to the community.
The Janice Mason Art Museum is located in
Historic Downtown Cadiz at 71 Main Street. Museum hours are Monday,
Tuesday, Thursday, Friday and Saturday 10 AM to 4 PM and 1 PM to 4 PM on Sunday.
