CADIZ, KY – The doors
open on an exciting new exhibit on June 24 at the Janice Mason Art
Museum featuring the work of Dick Dougherty. Mr. Dougherty lives in
Murray, KY and works at Murray State University. He is a Professor of
Art and chair of the Department of Art.
Dick’s primary medium is oil
paint, though occasionally he does produce colored pencil drawings,
and photographic installations. His most recent work is a series of
photographic installation pieces, which will be shown at The Janice
mason Art Museum in Cadiz, KY.
This exhibit features a photo
installation drawing from images in Trigg County and was inspired by
the documenting techniques of the Mars Rover space exploration
mission. Hopefully the viewer will observe some aspects of their
community in a different way and discover that the very mundane and
everyday environment can have great interest on many levels.
“The idea of scientists studying
every small detail in images for clues to the nature of those worlds
so far away was fascinating to me,” stated Dougherty. “What I strived
to accomplish with the Trigg county piece was taking this photographic
analysis system as an artistic medium. I looked for representative
elements that also provide an outsider clues about the community and
provide those familiar with the landscape a new perspective.”
In addition to the photo
installation Dick presents a series of still life paintings which are
of various kinds of fruit. However, each of these paintings presents
various life issues that are public events or more personal events.
The paintings and their frames are made as one work of art. The
frames utilize gilding in gold and silver leaf with a combination of
construction techniques. The end result is very contemporary with
classical undertones.
His work has been shown
extensively throughout the eastern United States with ten solo
exhibitions (two of which were in New York City) and over sixty group
exhibitions. Dick moved to Kentucky in 1992, when he left his
position as Director of Foundations at University of Massachusetts,
Dartmouth (UMD) for his current position at Murray State University.
Prior to the four years Dick spent at UMD he was acting president of a
small private art school, Swain School of Design.
The exhibit will have its
opening the night of June 24 and will continue through August 5. The
Janice Mason Art Museum is open from 10:00 to 4:00 P.M. Monday through
Saturday and 1:00-4:00 P.M. on Sunday. Partial funding is provided by
the Kentucky Arts Council, a state agency in the Commerce Cabinet,
with support from the National Endowment for the Arts.
