Museum Announces Mural Contest Winner!

The Janice Mason Art Museum announced today that Charlotte Wilson, of Cadiz, is the winner of the mural contest.  The contest was open to any artist to design a mural to appear in the lobby of the Museum.  As winner Mrs. Wilson will receive a $500 prize.  The Trigg County Historical Society underwrote the contest by providing the prize money.

The mural will be unveiled at the opening of the Kentucky Guild of Artisans and Craftsmen Exhibit, September 13, 2002.  Paul Fourshee who is the contest chair stated, “The committee has decided to keep the design of the mural secret as an added surprise for the community.  It is an excellent design and one of which I think everyone will be truly proud.”

Mrs. Wilson is a well know artist in Trigg County and is very active at the age of 85.  Many people will remember her numerous sketches for the Women’s Club calendars and her illustrations in the Trigg County History book.  Besides her interest in the Museum she is a vital part of the Trigg County Historical Society.

Paula Lisowsky, President of the Janice Mason Art Museum says, “This is one of the most interesting and vibrant people I have had the pleasure of meeting since moving to Trigg County.  It’s always such a pleasure to meet people who enrich their lives with art.  Mrs. Wilson is a true gem.”

The Janice Mason Art Museum is located in the old Cadiz Post Office building on Main Street.  This facility was built with WPA funds and was completed in 1940.  Most of these WPA buildings contained murals and indeed the Museum has a space designed for one but it was never painted.  The mural to be painted by Mrs. Wilson will appear above the door to the office in the lobby of the Museum.  It will be 13 feet long and 4 feet tall.  Mrs. Wilson stated that she has never painted anything that large and is excited about this opportunity.

The Janice Mason Art Museum is located at 71 Main Street, Cadiz.  You may find more information about the Museum and its exhibit schedule at www.jmam.org or contacting the office at 270-522-9056.
