International Exhibit to Open at JMAM
Cadiz, KY. Once again a unique and exciting opportunity presents itself
to the Janice Mason Art Museum (JMAM). Licht en lucht, wind en water
(Light and Air, Wind and Water), A Selection From 60 Years Work by Flip
Schrameijer opens August 12.
The show, which originated in Holland,
depicts portraits and scenes from the coastal regions of The Netherlands.
This exhibit of 150 pieces, primarily watercolor and etchings, travels to
Cadiz from museum exhibits in Belgium and The Netherlands. Its appearance
here is the inaugural exhibit in the United States. It will travel to
several other museums after leaving the Janice Mason Art Museum before
returning to The Netherlands.
Vicki Karrigan, Museum Board of Directors
President, said, "We are very lucky to have this opportunity. It is
exciting to think that Cadiz has connections to so many great art
collections." While acknowledging the previous JMAM exhibits of Steve
Shields and the Wier Collection, she referred to Johan Westenburg and
Machteld Schrameijer, Trigg County residents who were instrumental in
procuring this exhibit. Machteld, daughter of the artist, is a clothing
designer who lives in the Wallonia community. "Johan and Machteld are
wonderful assets to our artistic community. We certainly appreciate their
willingness to bring this exhibit to Cadiz," remarked exhibit chair Phara
Bourque. "It is no small endeavor to bring this exhibit to the United
States. It is an expensive venture that JMAM could not have afforded on
our own."
Flip Schrameijer, was born in 1919 in
Amsterdam and survived World War II. The war claimed the lives of his
mother, three sisters and two brothers when a German bomber crashed into
their home in September 1940. With a large number of children in the
family, the young Flip was able to escape outdoors where he later spent
many hours drawing and painting. After the war, Schrameijer focused his
attention on the coastal areas of The Netherlands which dominated his
life. As an artist he supplemented his income by teaching. Throughout his
life Schrameijer experimented with various styles and mediums staying with
those he enjoyed sometimes for a decade before moving on. Even though he
is aging and has suffered a stroke Schrameijer is still producing art
although not at such a prolific pace. A local newspaper in The Netherlands
recently had this to say about the exhibit:
"The current exposition . . . exhibits an important segment of
Schrameijer's career in which all the major periods are represented. It is
work that deserves admiration. His strength is in the simple, clear
communication of place and its atmosphere."
This exhibit, which will be on display through September 24, promises to
be one that everyone can relate to. Patrons are encouraged to take
advantage of this opportunity to see the life's work of an accomplished
artist. The Janice Mason Art Museum is open Mondays - Saturdays from 10:00
AM - 4:00 PM and on Sundays from 1:00 PM - 4:00 PM. More information may
be obtained by calling 270 522-9056 or by visiting the Museum's website at
www.jmam.org. The Kentucky Arts Council, a state agency in the Commerce
Cabinet, provides operational support funding for the Janice Mason Art
Museum with state tax dollars and federal funding from the National
Endowment for the Arts, which believes that a great nation deserves great
art.
