Cadiz, KY—No passport required!  Travel via western Kentucky to the little-known country of Bhutan through an amazing array of art and artifacts when Pursuit of Perfection--Bhutan: Druk Yul, Land of the Thunder Dragon opens April 28 at the Janice Mason Art Museum on Cadiz Main Street.

This exhibit consists of hundreds of items never displayed publicly in the United States combining the collection of the Cundiff family of Cadiz with the Judy and Joe Barker Collection from Nashville. Each of Bhutan’s thirteen Official Arts and Crafts are represented, including painting, carpentry, carving, sculpting, casting, blacksmithing, bamboo work, gold- and silver-working, weaving, embroidery, masonry, leather working, and paper making. The large concentration of textiles spans the range of style and materials, with some hundreds of years old. The exhibit also contains other artifacts of Bhutanese culture such as postage stamps.

Pursuit of Perfection will show through July 1.  Hands-on activities will be available for visiting children, with Fridays designated as “flag” days, when children will be able to print prayer flags to take home. Several other special events are planned during Pursuit of Perfection including a painting demonstration on opening day April 28 by visiting Bhutanese artist Phurba Namgay, a textile lecture and demonstration on May 20, and an archery (Bhutan’s national sport) demonstration with the Trigg County Arrowcats.  More information will be posted on the Museum’s website www.jmam.org as it becomes available.

The Janice Mason Art Museum is open Tuesdays – Saturdays 10:00 AM to 4:00 PM and Sundays 1:00 PM – 4:00 PM.  Evening hours can be arranged for group tours, and early hours for school groups.  Admission is free; donations are greatly appreciated.

The Kentucky Arts Council, a state agency in the Commerce Cabinet, provides operational support funding for the Janice Mason Art Museum with state tax dollars and federal funding from the National Endowment for the Arts, which believes that a great nation deserves great art.

Antique Betel Nut Box.

These small containers are used to hold the areca nuts, wrapped in betel leaves which are chewed (less so nowadays by the educated).  The round shape of this one indicates that it was used by nobility or senior clergy.  Many garments are designed with a betel nut pocket on the inside.
