Local Photographer, Phara Marquesa Bourque, to Exhibit at Janice Mason
Art Museum
Cadiz, KY--- Cadiz
resident Phara Marquesa Bourque brings her beautiful and sensitive
images from around the world to the Janice Mason Art Museum. Opening
April 29, Bourque’s exhibit features over forty color images taken in a
"National Geographic" style in Central and South America, Europe, and
the United States. “I chose images to appeal to both men and women.
There are tractors, silos, tobacco barns, along with portraits and
gardens scenes." Bourque's images are all "full frame" which is
something she prides herself on. "Full frame" means there is no
cropping or resizing of the image. She composes in the camera while
capturing the image.
Her first photography
experience was in first grade with a Polaroid camera. "I took a series
of five images and wrote a poem along with the visual story. I still
have them," Bourque remarked. She enrolled in photography classes at
the Cleveland Institute of Art through her junior and high school
years. She attended Ohio University in Athens, Ohio with a major in
photo journalism and a minor in art history. Bourque has been employed
at the
Chicago Reader, Maine Times, Vermont Times
and Vermont Magazine. “These were liberal weekly papers and the
funkier the images, the more requests I got for them," Bourque quipped.
She also taught at St. Michaels College and University of Vermont.
"I want to expose
people to diversity through my images. I have backpacked everywhere,
which makes me realize how privileged we are in America with clean
water, hot showers and public bathrooms. There is nothing like a dose
of the third world to make you appreciate your life here. I hope people
will take away a desire to travel, meet new people, and experience new
cultures from this exhibit,” said Bourque. “The world is an incredible
place and I want to experience much more of it with my husband and
children. Travel can be so challenging with small children; however,
people tend to open their hearts to you even more readily.”
