Local Museum wins historical publication award

            The Janice Mason Art Museum in Cadiz has received word from the Historical Confederation of Kentucky that they are the winners of an Award of Merit for their publication of a book about the work of artist Steve Shields.

            The Museum was selected from a field of over 50 contestants across the state of Kentucky.  The award recognizes an organization for documenting and publishing local history.  The Shields book is unique in that it historically documents the artwork of Steve Shields a Hopkinsville, KY resident who passed away in 1998.  This made the Janice Mason Art Museum eligible for nomination in a field typically available only to history museums.

            Karen Clement, president of the Janice Mason Art Museum, says, “This is the perfect opportunity for the community to see how the Museum can address different issues through art.”  Shields Exhibit Chair, Paul Fourshee stated, “I’m so pleased that the Museum is being recognized statewide for the efforts of our many volunteers.  It’s amazing how much this organization has accomplished through a primarily volunteer staff.”  The Museum seems to be a favorite charity among a large number of volunteers in the community.

            The Steve Shields exhibit was held in the summer of 2001 and received over 1600 visitors from all across Kentucky and surrounding states.  This award winning publication from the exhibit is still available at the Museum gift shop, 71 Main Street, Cadiz, KY.  Further information about the Janice Mason Art Museum, the Steve Shields exhibit and book may be found on their web site www.jmam.org or by calling the Museum office at 270-522-9056.
